Camas
Kadami's
Vito-Katja Daughter
KILGORE, Idaho - Meet Camas, dog detective. She finds bear scat better than any human detective can.
As trim and fit as many dogs half her age, this 7-year-old German shepherd is in the prime of her professional life, and eager to prove her mettle here in the Centennial Mountains near the remote hamlet of Kilgore in northeastern Idaho.
Camas bounds out of the back of a pickup, and with the help of trainer-handler-owner Alice Whitelaw, a wildlife biologist from Bozeman, Camas dons her working uniform - an orange vest with a noisy bear bell attached to the underside.
"Don't pet me, I'm working" warns the message stenciled on the vest.
